ALMA

Millimeter/submillimeter array studying cold gas, dust and planet formation.

Overview

ALMA is a 66-antenna millimeter/submillimeter array on the Chajnantor plateau in Chile, observing cold dust and gas invisible to optical telescopes. It has transformed views of planet-forming disks and dusty galaxies in the early universe.

Key discoveries

  • Ring and gap structures in protoplanetary disks
  • Detection of complex organic molecules in disks
  • Characterization of dusty submillimeter galaxies at high redshift
