Event Horizon Telescope

Earth-sized VLBI array imaging black-hole photon-ring scales.

Overview

The Event Horizon Telescope links dishes across the globe into an Earth-sized interferometer operating at 1.3 mm wavelength. In 2019 it released the first image resolving a black hole's shadow-scale structure in M87.

Key discoveries

  • First image of a black hole shadow (M87*, 2019)
  • Image of Sagittarius A* (2022)
  • Tests of general relativity on event-horizon scales
