IceCube Neutrino Observatory

Cubic-kilometer neutrino detector embedded in Antarctic ice.

Overview

IceCube instruments a cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice with photomultiplier tubes that register light from neutrino interactions. It established high-energy astrophysical neutrinos as a new astronomical messenger.

Key discoveries

  • Detection of a diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux
  • Neutrinos traced to the blazar TXS 0506+056
  • Foundation of neutrino multimessenger astronomy
