James Webb Space Telescope
Infrared observatory for early galaxies, star formation and exoplanet atmospheres.
Overview
JWST is a 6.5 m infrared telescope at the Sun–Earth L2 point that peers through dust and deep into cosmic history. Its early results include the most distant galaxies yet confirmed and molecular spectra of exoplanet atmospheres.
Key discoveries
- Galaxies at redshift z>10 in the early universe
- Molecular detections in exoplanet atmospheres
- Dust-penetrating views of star-forming regions
