Radio interferometer

Combines antennas to synthesize a much larger aperture.

Overview

Radio interferometers combine signals from separated antennas to synthesize the resolution of a single telescope spanning their separation. Aperture-synthesis imaging opened the radio sky to detailed study of relativistic jets, cold gas and the early universe.

Key discoveries

  • Aperture-synthesis mapping of radio sources
  • Imaging of relativistic jets in radio galaxies
  • Principle behind the VLA, ALMA and the Event Horizon Telescope
