Vera C. Rubin Observatory
Wide-field time-domain survey facility for the dynamic optical sky.
Overview
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory carries out the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, imaging the southern sky repeatedly with an 8.4 m mirror and a 3.2-gigapixel camera. Its alert stream will catalogue billions of objects and millions of nightly transient events.
Key discoveries
- Survey designed to catalogue roughly 20 billion galaxies
- Nightly transient-alert stream for time-domain astronomy
- Weak-lensing and transient data for dark-energy studies
