Einstein completes general relativity
Einstein completes general relativity
Overview
In November 1915 Albert Einstein completed the general theory of relativity, replacing Newton's gravitational force with the curvature of spacetime produced by matter and energy. The theory explained the anomalous precession of Mercury's orbit and predicted light bending, confirmed by Eddington's 1919 eclipse expedition. General relativity became the framework of modern cosmology and the basis for understanding black holes and gravitational waves.
