Lemaître derives an expanding universe

Lemaître derives an expanding universe

Overview

In 1927 the Belgian physicist and priest Georges Lemaître solved Einstein's equations for a homogeneous universe filled with matter and radiation, deriving an expanding cosmos in which galactic recession velocities grow with distance. Published in an obscure Belgian journal, the result went almost unnoticed until Hubble's 1929 velocity–distance measurements gave it observational reality. Lemaître went on to propose the 'primeval atom' — the first version of the Big Bang model.
