Cosmic microwave background discovered
Cosmic microwave background discovered
Overview
In 1965 Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, troubleshooting noise in a horn antenna at Bell Labs, found a uniform microwave glow arriving from every direction in the sky. Identified by Princeton theorists as the cooled remnant radiation of the hot early universe predicted by Gamow, Alpher and Herman, the cosmic microwave background made the Big Bang model decisively favoured over steady-state cosmology. It has since become the most precise fossil record of the infant universe.
