Accelerating cosmic expansion reported
Accelerating cosmic expansion reported
Overview
In 1998 two rival supernova teams — led by Adam Riess, Brian Schmidt and Saul Perlmutter — reported that distant Type Ia supernovae are fainter than expected in a decelerating universe. Cosmic expansion is accelerating, driven by a repulsive component dubbed dark energy that dominates the universe's energy budget. The finding, rewarded with the 2011 Nobel Prize, restored something like Einstein's cosmological constant and set the agenda of modern cosmology.
