JWST begins major science observations
Overview
In July 2022 the James Webb Space Telescope released its first science images — deep fields, exoplanet spectra and nebular structures in infrared — after deploying to the Sun–Earth L2 point. As the largest and most sensitive infrared observatory ever flown, JWST opened windows on the first galaxies, stellar nurseries and exoplanet atmospheres unreachable by earlier telescopes. Within its first years it pushed the galaxy redshift frontier past z = 14, stress-testing models of early galaxy formation.
