Aryabhata writes the Aryabhatiya
Overview
In 499 CE the Indian astronomer Aryabhata composed the Aryabhatiya, a concise Sanskrit treatise combining mathematics and astronomy. It described the apparent rotation of the sky as a consequence of Earth's own rotation, computed planetary periods, and gave procedures for eclipse prediction and trigonometric calculation. The work anchored a long tradition of Indian mathematical astronomy that influenced Islamic and, indirectly, European astronomy.
